Why invest in a vocational skill-based STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) training business?

The need of the hour is skills in emerging technologies like robotics, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), 3D printing, mechatronics,  drones, machine language learning, automation, prototype modelling, etc. These skills require practical hands-on knowledge in Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths (STEM) subjects that needs to be developed through the school years. Since schools do not provide this training, therefore there is a huge opportunity for training institutes to capture.

MakersLoft Franchisee must have:

  • Investment of minimum 15L INR
  • At least 800 sq. ft. space in a child-friendly neighbourhood
  • Contacts in school and with parents, or ability to develop contacts rapidly
  • Ability to hire skilled staff and teachers to run the center

Why Vocational skills training in important during schools years?

About 90 per cent of employment opportunities require vocational skills. Yet only 2.3 % of the workforce in India has undergone formal skill training as compared to 68% in the UK, 75% in Germany, 52% in USA and 80% in Japan. As a result, only 20 per cent of our graduates get employed and the rest are unable to get suitable employment due to the lack of employable skills.

Unfortunately, our school system has never addressed the issues of skilling, employability and entrepreneurship. It imparts education in general means, without clear focus on the life that lies ahead in profession.

Employable skills in 21st century include areas like creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, team work, communication etc. These skills relate to mind-set and practices that need to be built over a period of time. They cannot just be taught as a “crash course” in college just before placement season begins. Vocational skills need to be introduced to school students from an early age of 6-7 years onwards in an incremental manner. The Government of India has also now recognized the need for incorporation of skilling in the school curriculum and is investing heavily in initiatives like Atal Tinkering Lab for school, Skill India etc.
